Active and retired Postmasters may retain the services of experienced professional attorneys. Free counseling and representation on a variety of legal matters, plus fixed rates on such services as Will preparation, General Power of Attorney, and Bill of Sale.

The following is the list of No Fee, Reduced Fee and Fixed Fee Services available to you by being a current active member of The League

No Fee Services*

- Unlimited consultation and advice on any legal matter by telephone or correspondence during normal business hours.

- Document review of leases, real estate, personal property, installment and rental contracts, promissory notes, bills, bills of sale, and others up to three (3) pages.

- Advice on warranty problems and consumer complaints.

- Advice when Active Member or Retiree represents himself or herself in small claims court.

- Referral to trained local attorneys for complex legal matters, including but not limited to civil litigation, creditor-debtor, traffic violations, divorce, unemployment, criminal, real estate, federal and state tax.

- Consultation at no fee in any regular retirement matter, including but not limited to, disputes over annuity calculations, survivor annuity matters, Merit Systems Protection Board appeals, challenging OPM retirement decisions, and in representation before the employee’s agency and/or OPM retirement matters.

- Estate Planning consultation services.

- Consultation with the deceased League member’s personal representative (executor, executrix) regarding settlement of deceased member’s Estate.


Reduced Fee Services

The following legal services will be provided to members directly by the Benefit Provider at fifty percent (50%) of the prevailing community rate for those services.

- Retirement matters.

- Veteran’s rights appeals.

- Veteran’s benefits applications.

- Social Security disability applications.

- Social Security reconsideration applications.

- Social Security appeal hearings.

- Federal sector garnishment actions and defenses.

- Federal sector debt collection.

- Administrative appeals.

- Arbitration of consumer contract disputes.

- Consumer rights and problems with credit ratings.

- Enforcement of warranties.

- Preparation of antenuptial, postnuptial property settlement agreements.

- Name change.

- Birth Certificate.

- Landlord/tenant arbitration.

- Landlord/tenant negotiations.

- Real estate settlement-buyer or seller.

- Zoning violations.

- Refinancing principle residence.

- Complex living trusts and other pre-testamentary estate planning dispositions.

- Marriage annulments or other proceeding before ecclesiastical courts or religious tribunals.

- Any legal matter not previously covered by the Security Legal Services Benefit and not referred to local counsel in which the member and Benefit Provider mutually agree is subject to reduced fee services under the Program.


Fixed Cost Services*

- Simple Will for member $100.00

- Joint Simple Will for member and spouse $175.00

- Will with Testamentary Trust for member $500.00

- Joint Wills with Testamentary Trust for member & spouse $750.00

- General Power of Attorney $75.00

- Power of Attorney - Real Estate $50.00

- Bill of Sale $30.00

- Affidavit $30.00

- Living Wills $35.00

Over 250 other legal documents minimum fee $30.00


*Note - Members claiming the above benefits are responsible for expenses (i.e., filing fees, depositions, travel, copying, court costs, etc.)
