President's Message

Charles Mapa, President

Greetings Fellow Postmasters and LEAGUE Members

Dear Leaguers,

The National Convention has come and gone, and most of you who attended have settled back into your offices (if it’s possible for a Postmaster these days to settle into anything). By almost all accounts, everyone rated the convention very high, some said it was the best ever. Much work went into the preparation of this convention, just like every one of our conventions. Host Postmaster, Mark Martinez, Postmaster of Las Vegas, and his staff, bent over backwards to help us make the convention a success. As the Education Organization, we concentrated hard on providing workshops that gave real value to Postmasters. The lineup was impressive; there was something for everyone. We had Career Development for the younger Postmasters eager to move up (and the more experienced Postmasters that want to raise their high three), NPA/PFP to help you maximize your earnings, Form 150 to help you make sure that your post office is at the correct EAS level, Rural Route training, Revenue Generation, Writing, etc, etc, etc. All of these sessions were very well attended, a real tribute to Postmasters attending as they were almost all on Annual leave and not convention leave. Hopefully Postal Headquarters was paying attention to the dedication and desire of these Postmasters to continue to remain well trained and informed. The Postal Service is getting a great deal with the League providing the time, place, and Postmasters for this training. Thanks to all who worked to make these workshops a reality.

Anthony Vegliante, chief Human Resources Officer and Executive Vice President, addressed Postmasters and guests and concentrated on the financial and service performance of the Postal Service. He described some of the effects that the Postal Reform Bill is having and will continue to have on the operation of the Postal Service. He got loud cheers from the audience when he proclaimed that the days of having training just to say we trained someone on something are gone, training now will focus on what is really necessary for an individual to perform his or her job. He commended the League, the Education Organization, for taking the lead in providing real training for Postmasters.

Dale Goff, President of Napus and Ted Keating, President of Naps both addressed Leaguers. They talked about the challenges Postmasters and supervisors face every day, and how important the close relationships forged between the Napus, Naps and League Presidents over the last year have helped to make things better for all managers.

We celebrated two very important birthdays at our convention. Our Auxiliary (currently under President Charlene Wendt) the spouses, friends and family part of our organization, was founded 40 years ago, and our Adverse Action program under our nationally renowned attorney, John Difalco, began 20 years ago. What would the League be without them?

We had some very important elections conducted at the convention. Mark Strong, Postmaster from Arizona, was re-elected Vice President and then Executive Vice President, Linda Rumney, our incumbent Secretary Treasurer was re-elected, and Jack Jameson, Postmaster from North Carolina, was elected Vice President. We have all the makings for another very effective board to help lead us through the upcoming year. I would like to personally thank past National Vice President Cathy Sharkady who served the League well for the last two years.

Also newly elected additions to the ranks of the Area Coordinators are Gary Neirinckx (RI) Northeast Area, Gary Haenisch (OH) Eastern I, Sean Acord (WV) Eastern II/Cap Metro, Tina Holland (ID) Western I, and Steve Tomlins (CA) Pacific. All of these people are proven leaders and we look forward to great things from them.

Besides all of the important business and training issues that were a part of this convention, we had time for fun. Evenings were filled with parties, dancing, States’ Night, karaoke, slot tourneys, and banquets. It was indeed quite a convention. Plan now to join us next year in Louisville Kentucky for our National Convention there! You’ll be a better Postmaster for it.

We are continuing pay consultations with Postal Headquarters and hope to finalize these in the next few weeks. We are still confident that the Postal Service will show how much they appreciate Postmasters by providing them a fair pay package, and we hope that we will see something on WSCs. The League will likely issue a joint statement with our sister organization, Napus, once a final agreement is reached.

Please review our Legislative agenda elsewhere on this webpage. Of special note are the articles on Vote by Mail, and Do Not Mail Lists. Bill Krejci and the Legislative Committee are doing a great job keeping that link on the cutting edge. Bob Brinkmann, our Legislative consultant has spent the better part of the week in the hospital. We are pleased that he is now recovering.

It’s time to gear up for your fall Area meetings. I look forward to seeing many of you at those gatherings. In the meantime, be sure to take some time off, leave the post office behind, spent some time with your loved ones living life in what’s left of summer!

Sincerely,

Charley Mapa
President
