President's Message
August 24, 2009
Charles Mapa, President
Dear Leaguers,
For those of you who joined hundreds of your colleagues at our National Convention in Buffalo, I must say, it was good to see you! By now you’ve had an opportunity to get back to your offices to get caught up with all of the work that was waiting for you. Hopefully, you got back refreshed and looking forward to doing what you do best; serve the American people. Whew, what a convention! The agenda was full, very full, as promised. Our workshops were well-attended in spite of almost all attendees there on Annual Leave; now that shows dedication! There were workshops there for everyone; Postmasters, retirees and auxiliary. The entertainment was great and we had more people take advantage of the tours than ever before! We were also able to honor some special people. First of all, our Leadership Awards , sponsored by the Atlanta Postal Credit Union, recognizing the hard work of League leaders over the last year, were presented to Bill Brickl (WI), Susan Kulak (AZ), Brenda Knoth (KY), Bill Donaldson (OH) and Brian Archuleta (NM). I was also pleased to present my President’s Awards to people who don’t usually win awards for their efforts, but who have contributed greatly to the League and its programs, sometimes for many years. These winners are Sunny Sundquist, who has provided the musical accompaniment at our conventions and Forums for as long as I can remember; Marjorie Adams, who has coordinated the convention program for years; Bill Krejci, who is our Legislative Chair and who did perhaps more than anyone to get co-signers for HR 22; Jeonilla Van Houten who has been working years behind the scenes at the convention in the press room; and Mike Perrone who, with wife Kathy, has been locating convention sites for the League for a long, long time. Thanks to each of you.
At our banquet, we first honored departing board members Executive Vice President Mark Strong, Secretary/Treasurer Linda Rumney, and Retiree President Jimmy Merritt. There is not enough room here to recount all that they have done for the League, but I assure you, the League and the Postal Service are better because of them. Next, we awarded the League’s highest honor, that of National Postmaster of the Year. This year’s Postmaster of the Year, chosen from all the Postmasters in the country in our 51 branches, is Bob Mayhar. Bob was a tremendous choice and, even though the award honors efforts over the last year, Bob has been giving to the League and his fellow Postmasters for his entire Postmaster career.
Finally, we honored a long-time Leaguer with our greatest lifetime achievement award, named for our founder, Oscar Pogue. Our honoree is Josie Zunno who has vividly displayed the traits of unselfish giving exemplified by Oscar Pogue. Her contributions to membership and PAC are legendary.
You see, the National Convention WAS great; the product of years of planning and effort. Next year, we will be in beautiful San Diego, California. The weather doesn’t get any better than there and the California Branch has promised the convention of conventions! Mark your calendar now and plan to join us in sunny southern California.
The year 2009 has been a banner one for Bob Mayhar in more ways than one. After Bob, accompanied by wife Becky and his daughter, received his Postmaster of the Year Award to the thunder of a standing ovation, it was announced that he is our new National Editor. A branch editor himself, Bob brings years of newsletter writing experience and postal concerns intuition to that position. He takes up the reins from previous National Editor Tom McCarthy who set the bar quite high. We are looking for Bob’s own special brand to do the same thing during his tenure as National Editor.
Your new National Executive Board brings some new energy. We welcome Kelly McCartney as our newly elected National Vice President, Shelly Souders as our new National Secretary/Treasurer and Bill Brennan, National Retiree President to our National Board. Jack Jameson, getting a chance to put his extensive experience to use, will serve as Executive Vice President. Additionally, newly elected Area Coordinators are as follows; Denise Owen, Great Lakes Area; Landa Harris, SW Area; Jo Oberly, Eastern Area; Richard Wendt, Western 2; and Cathy Winnie in the Northeast. We’ve got a great lineup of leaders for the coming year!
Respectfully,
Charley Mapa
