President's Message
November 10, 2009
Charles Mapa, President
Dear Leaguers,
Veterans Day
Tomorrow we will enjoy a day off to celebrate Veterans Day. One day a year, our nation devotes an entire day to honor our Veterans. I always look forward to this day. It is a day that I devote to reflecting on the freedoms that I have and I only have those freedoms because brave men and women served me by joining the military. That’s right; they serve me and all Americans by putting their lives on the line for us. I am pleased to live in a time when we actually do honor our veterans. It was not always so. One of the ugliest times in the history of America was during the Vietnam War. Thousands of American servicemen and women in uniform were subjected to insults, spittle and ridicule in the streets of their own country. It was not an easy time for my fellow Vietnam era vets. Things are different now. The media have not demonized our military men and women. By and large, our veterans are afforded the honor and respect that they deserve. That does please me. Now it is our own daughters and sons, nieces and nephews that every day put their lives on the line to serve us and the freedoms that we should hold so dear. This year, I thank each one of you who have served and are still serving to preserve our freedoms and the freedom of so many in the world. Join me tomorrow as I give thanks for our servicemen and women and join me in prayer for their safety. Or you can be a little more demonstrative as is my wife, Gwenda, who takes the time to personally thank any man or woman in uniform that she passes in the streets for their service to our country.
Upcoming Forum
Our annual Legislative Forum is coming up soon. Here is your opportunity to exercise one of your hard won freedoms by joining us here in Washington DC to walk the halls of Congress on behalf of Postmasters and the Postal Service! Our Forum is a tremendous event that allows us to have our voices heard where they can really make a difference. This year’s Forum is scheduled for the last part of January and it promises to be another exciting event. As always, we will provide some great training, a chance to listen to important speakers and to network with Postmasters from all over the country. One of the special things about Forum is being able to visit our representatives in Congress to share with them the messages of the League. It is also a very good time to take some extra time to visit the scores of historical sights in our nation’s capital with your friends and family. Many Postmasters see great value in bringing their children and grandchildren here to learn something about their country firsthand. You can go right now on this website to register for our Forum and to reserve your hotel rooms for this tremendous event!
Respectfully,
Charley Mapa
